Cairns is the ultimate school holiday escape for families with kids. This Far North Queensland holiday destination is packed with heaps of things to do and see to keep the kids well and truly entertained during your stay.

1. Cairns Esplanade and Swimming Lagoon

The Cairns Swimming Lagoon covers 4 hectares and is so massive that it can accommodate 1,000 swimmers at a time. This crystal clear man-made salt water swimming sanctuary ranges in depth from 32 inches to 5 feet to cater for all age groups. The Lagoon features underwater seating benches so you can sit in the water and keep cool or sunbake on the grassy knoll surrounding the water. The large swimming area is patrolled daily by Life Guards who ensure the safety of all swimmers. There are also 12 BBQ facilities near the Lagoon that are cleaned daily and are available for use throughout the day.

2. Outer Barrier Reef Pontoon Tour

Great Barrier Reef tours for the little ones are best done on one of the Outer Barrier Reef Pontoons, as they provide lots of on-board interactive things to do and see, that are specially designed for kids. All of the tourist boats carry floatation equipment such as pool noodles and floatation jackets. The kids can spend their time on the platform’s underwater observatories gazing at the marine life, then take a ride in the semi-submersible submarines or cruise around the reef on a glass bottom boat tour to see the coral gardens in the deeper water.

3. Kuranda Vintage Train & Skyrail

Most kids love a train ride! Take a ride on the world famous historic Kuranda Scenic Railway up to Kuranda Village, take a look around this interesting little town and then catch the Kuranda Skyrail back down to Cairns.  For the animal enthusiasts there are fantastic animal attractions and informative shows at Kuranda at Birdworld, the Butterfly Sanctuary, the Koala Gardens, the BatReach sanctuary and the Venom Zoo.
