Pick up a Sourvenir | Cairns
One of best parts of going on holiday is picking out a souvenir to remember the wonderful experiences you had with your family while on holiday. Cairns has many different places for you to pick up something big or small, and all of them have you covered.
The Night Market (Every Night - 4pm - 10pm)
The Night Market is located in Cairns City at 54/60 Abbott St (12 minute walk from Getaway on Grafton). The markets open from 4.30pm to 11pm daily and cater for almost anyone. The typical souvenirs of fridge magnets, bottle openers and ‘I Love Cairns’ apparel is on sale, but if you want something a little out of the ordinary, there’s still plenty on offer. Get your name hand written on a rice grain and made into a keychain or piece of jewellery. Get a custom-made hat spray painted by an artist. Get a turtle, stingray or fish made out of glass by the glassblower showing off his talents every night. Whatever you’re looking for, you’ll probably find it at the night markets.
Cairns Markets (Saturdays)
Every Saturday between 8am and 4pm, the Cairns Esplanade transforms into a display of locally made products including clothing, art, pottery, jewellery and other accessories. Ideally located in the centre of town beside the lagoon just 15 minute walk from Getaway on Grafton Holiday Apartments, you can weave your way through numerous stalls to find the perfect something that will remind you of your time in Cairns, or gift for someone at home. Harry Potter themed infant-wear, unique skincare and caricatures can all be found at the Cairns Markets on Saturdays.
Rusty’s Markets (Friday - Saturday - Sunday)
Located a short walk from Getaway - 57-89 Grafton Street.
While most people know if Rusty’s Markets for the wonderful local fruit and vegetable produce, it should not be overlooked for the souvenirs and locally made crafts on sale. Beautiful jewellery and clothing can be found at Rusty’s Markets. These markets are open on weekends only (Friday, Saturday and Sunday), but provide an excellent opportunity to pick up something special while doing the grocery shopping.
Famously known as ‘The Markets in the Rainforest’, if you’re heading to Kuranda via Train, Skyrail, bus or car, why not check out the ‘Original Markets’ or ‘Heritage Markets’ located in Kuranda? In between holding koalas (Koala Gardens), and learning about the birds (Birdworld) and the butterflies (Butterfly Sanctuary), we recommend indulging on delicious home-made fudge in over a hundred different flavours. You could also watch soft lollies being crafted and packaged (then buy a small barrel full of these little delights because they look so delicious). Treat yourself with opal jewellery, or let someone read your fortune and enjoy tropical flavoured ice creams, juices and honey.
Local Cairns Shops / Cairns Central Shopping Centre
If you don’t get time to make it to any of the markets above, fear not! A number of souvenir shops are scattered throughout the city and in the Cairns Central Shopping Centre. While these shops predominantly sell the typical gift of t-shirts, keyrings and magnets, you’re bound to be surprised by some of the other oddities on sale to remind you of your time here.
