CANYONING | RAGING THUNDER
Being a born and raised in Cairns I don’t often play the tourist role, but when being given the chance to experience Raging Thunder’s canyoning tour this was an offer I could not turn down.
If you are adventurous, brave, somewhat fit, love the outdoors and isn’t afraid of heights, then this is the tour for you!
We started our day early to beat the tropical heat, being picked up at 6:40am by the Raging Thunder bus. Arriving at Raging Thunders office where we met the Canyoning guides and they helped us with our equipment. This will include a helmet, a pair of shoes ($5 to hire, or you can bring your own make sure they have good grip), a life jacket and a harness. We then hopped onto another bus where we had a quick 20-minute drive to Crystal Cascades.
Once putting all the gear on, we had a short hike to our destination up the top of Crystal Cascades in a restricted area that the public does not have access to.
We practiced our hand grips, so we can help our team mates when needed, how to correctly use our clips on our harness before abseiling down our first waterfall.
You are then given the option of doing either a 4 metre jump or a 10-metre jump, luckily on this day I was feeling a little more adventurist, so I went with the 10-metre jump. Soon enough you find yourself abseiling down a 30-metre waterfall but in my case “falling down”.
Altogether, the day includes of 5 abseils, 4 rock jumps, a few rock slides and a 30 metre zipline. Our tour guides did an amazing job at making our group feel safe and comfortable throughout the tour. We were very happy with our day and the outcome of the tour once again being locals we were surprised what is in our backyards.
We would recommend Raging Thunder Canyoning to anyone who is up for the adventure, our friendly tour desk staff are here to answer any questions you may have and can help you book with no booking fees/ credit card fees.
